A Southeast Asian fiesta collides with coastal Aussie bogan culture to playfully traverse trauma and identity in She’ll Be Right?, the upcoming solo show by Burmese-Australian artist Shân Primrose.
Exploring her lived experiences over the past 29 years, from the Mornington Peninsula, to Naarm, Myanmar, Newcastle (NSW), Mexico and Italy, the artist draws influence from the anguish, beauty and growth that each geographic transition has bestowed upon her.
Inspired by kaleidoscopic watercolour creatures crawling out of dusty year 12 folios, this multi-scale body of work explores resilience through themes of small town queerness, evil share houses, mental health care plans, cultural identity crises, relationships and more.
Confronting, but relatable. Raw, but colourful. Like the ‘This is fine’ house fire meme that has come to represent a generation living amidst perpetual horrors, Primrose invites viewers to have fun in the midst of the shitshow.
She’ll Be Right? illuminates the darkest parts of our personal journeys, with a knowing nod to the effervescent experiences beneath our eternal Aussie affirmations.
Laugh, cry and overshare… but no worries if not :-)
