What we carry with us
Words by Christine Chan
Home is
what strips you back to your roots,
but it also makes you appreciate
how far you have come.
One can experience a hunger for home.
I remember, as a teenager,
in an act of rebellion,
I threated to run away from home.
Now, as an adult,
I am often chasing it,
longing for its comfort,
and counting down to
when I can return to it.
In my bedroom of my current home
I have a framed art print -
a souvenir from my holidays.
The print is of a girl with her eyes shut
and a home sitting atop her head.
The home seems to sit comfortably there.
Stuck on the picture frame is a quote I had cut out from an exhibition handout.
The quote is from artist Do Ho Suh:
“Home is what we carry with us.”
